In 1961, a group began to meet for service in a three-bedroom house at Anzio and Mandarin, resulting in a need for a Baptist Church in Tangelo Park. Under the sponsorship of the First Baptist Church of Orlando, The Tangelo Baptist Church had its beginning with Reverend N. Maggard as the organizing pastor. In October 1962 the church was established, and incorporated. Tangelo Baptist Church is located at 7001 Ravenna Ave. in the Tangelo Park Subdivision of Orlando, Florida.

During the early years, several ministers served as the church increased in membership. These times were not without change and difficulties. However with Gods help, dedicated leadership and faithful members, all worked together to ensure that God’s work continued at Tangelo. In 1971 Reverend Herman Brandon was installed and served as the pastor. This

time is referred to as the “Lean Years”. Reverend Brandon and the members did a lot of praying and sacrificing to keep the church running. They remodeled, and paid off the church debt. On November 20, 1977 a Thanksgiving “Bond burning ”was held, and in December, the deed of trust was recorded. Tangelo Baptist Church membership really earned their church. Because of failing health, Reverend Brandon retired in February 1990.

Under
Reverend Brandon’s leadership Tangelo’s:
  Membership grew
  Furniture and Pews were purchased
  The Usher Board was established
Church Bonds were paid in full
The Out Reach Program was organized

In January 1991, Reverend Clifford Marity served as pastor until 1994. Under his leadership, the church grew numerically, and spiritually.

During Reverend Marity’s tenure:
¨  Reverend Leroy William’s was licensed and ordained
¨  Six deacons were ordained
¨  The evangelistic effort in the community was organized
¨  A parent ministry was organized
¨  A drug ministry was organized
¨  A morning bible class was organized for seniors

Following the resignation of Reverend Marity, Reverend Young Glover was called to be the interim Pastor of Tangelo Baptist Church. Reverend Glover served Tangelo faithfully from August 1995 until December 1996.

In November of 1996 Tangelo’s membership called Rev. Shelly Tunson III. He was installed as pastor on February 16, 1997. Rev Tunson was a young family man, full of energy, vision and love for Gods’ people. He felt that the church was the lifeline of the community. It was his firm belief that the church should be a safe haven, a place where God’s people could come for nourishment and encouragement. It was under Reverend Tunsons’ leadership that Tangelo adopted the motto “ The Family That Cares”.  He also loved the youth, and could often be found interacting with them at the YMCA, where he was known as “ Revy Reverend”. On June 13, 1998, the Lord called Reverend Tunson home. He served only eighteen months. The Tangelo Baptist church membership was left shocked and deeply hurt.

Under Reverend Tunson’s leader ship:
The church grew spiritually, numerically, and financially
Tangelo’s couple Ministry was established
Weekly Bible study attendance increased
Family counseling was provided
The Men’s chorus (lovingly nicknamed the “Sons of Thunder”) was reorganized
The Dance Ministry was established

Reverend Young Glover was again called to serve as Interim Pastor of Tangelo. He stood and prayed with Tangelo, that God would send the right shepherd to lead the flock again. Reverend Glover served from August 1998 to April 2000.

During Rev Glover’s second tenure:
Three sons of Tangelo’s flock were called to the Gospel Preaching ministry
The Rites of Passage was organized

In April 2000, Doctor Frank S. Smith was called to pastor Tangelo, and was installed on May 28, 2000. Since his installation Doctor Smith has introduced a Five Year plan for the growth of Tangelo Baptist Church. Doctor Smith is a pastor/teacher. He has begun his ministry by nourishing the flock of God through his first annual theme MINISTERING THROUGH COMPASSION. Doctor Smith’s pastorate has been marked by an increase in new members uniting with our church family and former members restoring their membership.

Additionally under Doctor Smith there has been:
¨  Increased Bible study attendance
¨  Increased Sunday School attendance
¨  Increased Discipleship Training Attendance
¨  The Gracious Ladies were organized
¨  A Jail Ministry was established
¨  The three sons called under the Interim Pastorate of Reverend Glover were licensed to preach the gospel
¨  Conducted the First Annual Vision 2000 Leadership Conference
